413 – The McFarthest Place: 145 Mi to the Nearest Big Mac « Strange Maps

There are over 13,000 McDonald’s restaurants in the US, or about 1 for every 23,000 Americans. But even market penetration this advanced doesn’t mean that McDonald’s is everywhere. Somewhere in South Dakota is the McFarthest Spot, the place in the US geographically most removed from the nearest McD’s (*). If you started out from this location, a few miles north of State Highway 20 (which runs latitudinally between Highways 73 in the west and 65 in the east), you’d have to drive 145 miles to get your Big Mac

  1. I think it is interesting that there is only 1 McDonalds for every 23,000 people. I thought it would be a lot less people per McDonalds. By looking at this map you can really see where our country is most populated. I think it is crazy how much of difference there is between each half of the united states. its as though our country is split down the Mississippi river. i wonder if there are so many more McDonalds to the east of the Mississippi just because of population reasons or if there is another reason other of that. i think it is mainly based on population but it could be based on something else like possibly people in west U.S. like dairy queen better than McDonalds.
