China ‘ready to abandon North Korea’

Wikileaks cables reveal China ‘ready to abandon North Korea’ | World news | The Guardian.

China has signalled its readiness to accept Korean reunification and is privately distancing itself from the North Korean regime, according to leaked US embassy cables that reveal senior Beijing figures regard their official ally as a “spoiled child”.

…younger generation Chinese Communist party leaders no longer regarded North Korea as a useful or reliable ally and would not risk renewed armed conflict on the peninsula,…

The article points out that China would see a massive flood of refugees if DPRONK collapses, but would be willing to take in only 300,000.  Then they would use their military to close the border.

Although the leak of diplomatic emails is totally wrong, it does shed some new insight into relations between China and North Korea.  Unfortunately, it won’t change how Kim Jong-il runs the country, and it won’t avert a probable power struggle for control of the isolated nation when he dies.
